Maalim - Little Black Rhino

We couldn’t leave out this little black rhino that was rescued too!! Again thank goodness for at Daphnie Sheldrick’s Orphanage in Kenya. Maalim was born premature and unfortunately, was immediately abandoned by his rhino mother. Thankfully a KWS Ranger (of the same name) spotted the little guy - who was described as having been able to have fit into a lady’s handbag when he arrived in the Nursery!

Maalim would have been two years old in December, but having been born premature, he was always more susceptible than usual to respiratory problems and suffered from a serious onslaught of pneumonia. His sudden demise was unexpected and his caregivers were devastated.

Perhaps he would never have been able to make it as a wild rhino bull who has to fight for territory and rank, so perhaps his peaceful and painless end should be viewed as a blessing in disguise. During his short life, he was adored and much loved, and above all, he was happy and playful, living each day to the fullest, until the pneumonia took its toll.
